Voting Systems in Maryland

VOTER ELIGIBILITY
You are eligible to vote if you ... 
  • are a U.S. citizen 
  • are at least 18 or will be at the time of the next general election 
  • are a legal resident of Maryland 
  • have not been convicted (without pardon) more than once of an infamous crime 
  • are not under sentence or on probation or parole following conviction for an infamous crime
  • are not under guardianship for mental disability 
  • are registered to vote in the county

VOTER REGISTRATION

IN PERSON  Residents can register in the office of the Board of Elections Supervisors  at 41650 Tudor Hall Road in Leonardtown.  For available times, call the office at 301-475-7844 Ext. 1610 or visit their website at St. Mary's County Board of Elections.

BY MAIL  Required forms are available in state buildings, post offices, courthouses, and libraries. Voter registration is also available through MVA offices.

ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Any qualified voter who wishes may apply for the absentee ballot. When your signed application is processed and you are found qualified, the ballot will be mailed to you.  The week before an election, you may obtain an absentee ballot by going IN PERSON to the Board of Elections. Instructions for completing and returning the ballot will be included.

 TAKING TIME TO VOTE

Maryland law states that:
  • Employees who do not have two hours before or after work to vote may take up to two hours of leave to vote.
  • Employers may specify the time during the day that leave can be taken.
  • Employees are entitled to paid leave but are required to provide employers with proof of voting.

    CHILDREN AT THE POLLS
  • You may take one or two children (ages 13 and under) with you into the voting booth. 
  • Children ages 14 and over may go into the polling place, but will have to wait for you while you vote.
  • If getting to the polls is difficult because of childcare or transportation, you may request an absentee ballot ahead of time, fill out your ballot at home, and then mail it in.

 INFORMATION ABOUT CANDIDATES

The League provides candidate information guides in the fall to promote political responsibility and active participation by citizens in government.  Voters' Guides are also frequently found in libraries, post offices, and other places convenient for public use.  Also try:
