The League of Women Voters is noted for its thorough and intensive study of important issues that affect citizens and our communities. These studies are the basis for the member consensus process, which we follow to arrive at and adopt positions that direct our action and advocacy efforts on the local, state, or national levels.

The LWV also invites guest speakers and provides public forums. Recently, LWVSMC has offered programs on the following topics: Emergency Management, Civil Liberties and the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act, our county schools (with the Superintendent), Affordable Housing, and Environmental Impact. See LWV SMC Activities for what's next!

St. Mary's County Issues
AFFORDABLE HOUSING PRESENTATION to County Commissioners
On October 28th, 2003, Bill Knoeller represented our chapter of the League when he presented a comprehensive study on the state of affordable housing in St. Mary’s County to the County Commissioners. This is a priority of our Commissioners, but it’s up to all of us to keep this vital issue on the FRONT burner! Prices of real estate and housing continue to escalate in our county, leaving many hard-working people on the brink of homelessness. (Read LWV-St. Mary's study and consensus on this all-important issue.)

Tired of waiting at all those traffic lights on Route 235?
LWV-SMC recommends we all help relieve traffic congestion by carpooling or using public transportation whenever possible. Go to St. Mary's Public Transport System for their schedule.

Picking up kids from afterschool activities keeping you on the road all the time?  The Route 5 Express stops at Great Mills and Leonardtown High Schools in the afternoon, and the ride costs only $1.  Chopticon students can look into taking the Charlotte Hall-Leonardtown Loop, either southbound or northbound.

Wondering who your county commissioner is? The LWV-published brochure Know Your County is available in local libraries.  See also this site's County Government Page.
