BUDGET ---   OPPOSE TRANSFER OF FUNDS FROM THE CIGARETTE FUND TO NON-PUBIC
SCHOOL TEXTBOOK FUND

 


The bill passed the Maryland state Senate this morning!   Call or email your
Delegate NOW!

 

 

The League of Women Voters of Maryland strongly opposes the diversion of
public state funds to private schools for textbooks and technology.  Public
schools will receive less funding than anticipated in FY 2009 and 2010
because of modifications made in the Thornton formula during the November
2007 special legislative session.  As a result, public schools throughout
the state will be unable to implement planned reforms, such as smaller class
size, and attract and retain highly qualified teachers.

 

Current revenue estimates indicate that further cuts are needed to balance
the budget.  If there are funds available for private schools, they should
go to mitigating the effects of these shortfalls.

 

To channel additional state funds to private and parochial schools from a
budget that is already under funding not only public schools but other
services for low and moderate income families and individuals would be
unconscionable.
