Making Democracy Work
Legislative Action Center
Submitted by LWV Maryland on Mon 24 Nov 2008 - 2:48 pm
After studying an issue, producing a Fact Sheet, and arriving by consensus at a position, the League of Women Voters moves to the Action and Advocacy Stage. LWV members actively lobby legislators, both in person, with testimony, and by mail and email. The LWV also publishes information, sends out press releases, and holds educational forums and sends out Action Alerts so that all members of the community may also communicate with their legislators.
In 2011, LWVMD's legislative priorities are
- Supporting an equitable and efficient fiscal structure that provides adequate funding for public services (Public transportation, Healthcare coverage, Affordable Housing, Children’s services)
- Monitoring the state redistricting process and standards that promote fair and effective representation in the Maryland legislature and US House of Representatives with maximum opportunity for public scrutiny. Redistricting plans should be based on substantially equal population.
- Continuing to work for fair and open government, sound election practices, and campaign finance reform.
Keep watch on your government via TV: On the weekly show "State Circle" on Maryland Public TV, host Jeff Salkin and reporters Lou Davis and Charles Robinson provide analysis of analysis of major issues and pending bills. The show often features interviews with experts and elected representatives.
Maryland Public Television also shows proceedings of the General Assembly at midnights Tuesday through Friday while the General Assembly is in session. Tune in or record it to see your elected legislators in action. You might even see a League Member giving testimony.
